Genetic Carrier Screening: Media Release
For many years genetic carrier screening has not been considered by those planning pregnancies. SMA Australia, Cystic Fibrosis Community Care and Fragile X Association have been paving the way collectively to ensure that carrier screening is considered by couples when planning a pregnancy. The many years of advocating for the test to be publicly funded has finally paid off. MSAC (Medical Services Advisory Committee) has recently recommended to Health Minister Greg Hunt that carrier screening for SMA, CF and FX, be added to Medicare. This is a huge step forward for all our communities, as currently the test is $385.
We urge the minister to fund these tests to ensure access for many families wanting to start a pregnancy.
