Ms Joanna Shields

VICE PRESIDENT
Master of laws (juris doctor), Bachelor of Science

I first became interested in genetics after my cousin’s child was born with cystic fibrosis. I went on to study human genetics at university. I am passionate about supporting research into genetic disorders and want to help grow the Association so that it can continue to make meaningful contributions to  research and treatment of spinal muscular atrophy, in addition to supporting the families and individuals affected. My friends would describe me as pragmatic, ambitious and spirited. I am also community-minded and motivated by a desire to help others. I understand it takes a lot of hard work to be successful but I have never shied away from hard work. One of my favourite quotes is that “there are no shortcuts to any place worth going” and I would like to help SMA Association of Australia get to a place worth going! I work as an employment lawyer at a mid-tier commercial law firm. In my spare time I like to play hockey, hike, travel, and spend time with my partner, family and friends.

 Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA)

Graduate Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD)

With over 20 years of Accounting and Finance experience within the Biotech, Photographic, Graphic and Medical industries, my skill sets are vast.  The past nine years I have been working at Biota which is a leading anti-infective drug development company, based in Melbourne, Australia and Oxford, United Kingdom.  It was an Australian Publicly Listed Company until recently when we listed on the NASDAQ.  Over the years at Biota I have participated in the company’s growth to a Top 200 ASX-listed company, which involved liaising will all levels of management and supervising consultants, the implementation of Sarbanes Oxley processes, corporate governance, Board committees as well as regulatory reporting.   SMA provides me with the opportunity to use my accounting skills as well and my understanding of the Research environment to help progress the funded research side of the SMA work.
